Medical genetics has evolved from a specialty focused mainly on rare disorders into a foundation of modern clinical medicine. Genomic information supports diagnosis, treatment selection, prevention and long-term management across disciplines.

Oncology. Cancer is a genetic disease. Around 5–10% of cancers are attributable to inherited pathogenic variants, while acquired genomic alterations drive many sporadic cancers. Recognizing hereditary cancer susceptibility can guide surveillance, risk-reducing measures, targeted treatment and testing for relatives.1

Neurology. Genomic testing can improve diagnosis in epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, hereditary neuropathies and muscular disorders. Evidence supports exome sequencing as an early diagnostic test for unexplained neurodevelopmental disorders.2

Cardiovascular medicine. Genetic evaluation supports diagnosis and family screening in inherited cardiomyopathies, arrhythmia syndromes, familial hypercholesterolemia and aortopathies, enabling surveillance and preventive care for relatives.3

Nephrology and rare disease. Monogenic disorders make a clinically important contribution to chronic kidney disease. A genomic diagnosis may affect treatment, transplant planning, recurrence-risk assessment and family counselling.4

Reproductive medicine. Carrier screening, prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic testing help prospective parents understand inherited risks and make informed reproductive decisions.
